Ala Moana Sewer Improvements
Sewer improvements beneath one of the busiest shopping centers in the Pacific, performed below sea level and largely overnight to keep the property operating.
MIRA sequenced the work around live retail operations, dewatering the site and completing improvements during overnight windows to minimize disruption for tenants and customers.
The challenges
The ground-level parking area sat below sea level, so groundwater had to be continuously pumped and managed to keep the excavation dry.
Because the center remained open during the day, most work was carried out at night, limiting access and complicating material deliveries.
Owner-driven changes and additions to the plans were absorbed and coordinated without disrupting mall operations.
